Toreros Surf Green Wave to 5-2 Victory

March 28, 2010

SAN DIEGO - On the back of an initial doubles point advantage, the 57th-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team captured four singles victories against Tulane University Sunday afternoon, notching its second straight win with a 5-2 victory at the home site of the USD West Tennis Courts.

The Toreros, which managed to break a four match doubles skid, improve to 9-6 overall in the dual match campaign, while the Green Wave of Tulane drop to 3-10.

"We had a good aggressive doubles effort. This is the time of year in which we need to work on our training and prepare for the final stretch of the season. We managed to stay focused and come out with the win," said head coach Brett Masi, following the Torero victory.

USD got off on the right foot, sweeping the tandem point and earning the early edge. The Toreros defeated each Tulane counterpart pair by a final of 8-6.

In the individual competition, San Diego went up 3-0 with efficient wins at Court #6 and soon after at #3. Abdullah Hashem at No. 6 sailed past Etham Frenkel, 6-2, 6-0, while Thibaut Visy needed only two sets to defeat Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 6-2, 6-2.

The Wave managed to take the next point at Court #5, but Dean Jackson at Court #1 wrapped up the Torero triumph against Joe Young, 6-4, 6-4. With the win, Jackson moves to an impressive overall mark of 10-1 at the No.1 slot.

With the match in the bag, Nikola Bubnic, ranked No. 100 in the ITA College Tennis Rankings, grabbed the final San Diego point at Court #2. Bubnic, who posted his 12th singles victory, battled Shaye Wali, tallying the first set result, 6-3, with relative ease. The Serbian native would be challenged in the second set, however, but eventually downed Wali, 7-6(3).

San Diego will have a week and a half respite before closing out the dual match home slate against cross-town rival San Diego State University. The contest will be held at the USD West Tennis Courts on April 7th, kicking off at 2 p.m. PT.
