FRESNO, Calif. - The 58th-ranked University of San Diego men's tennis team could not hold off 29th-ranked Fresno State Sunday afternoon at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center in Fresno, Calif., dropping a 5-2 decision to the Bulldogs.
The Toreros fall to 9-8 with just two matches remaining in the dual campaign, while the Bulldogs, a perfect 9-0 at home this season, continue to climb, now standing at an overall mark of 15-8.
Fresno managed to set the tone early, taking the doubles point at Court #1 and #2.
The Toreros managed to pick up two singles wins, but not until the Bulldogs had already wrapped up the match win. Tallying the points for San Diego, Dean Jackson and Nikola Bubnic have now combined for a solid mark of 26-4 at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
Jackson, 12-1 now in dual play at No. 1, was stretched to three sets before notching the victory from the Dogs' Mirko Zapletal. After falling in the first set, 2-6, Jackson rebounded to take the next two, 6-1, 7-5.
Bubnic, ranked #94 in the ITA polls, was also forced to play a tiebreaking set against Rikus de Villiers at No. 2. Following a first set victory, 6-4, Bubnic was tripped up, 5-7, in the second. In the deciding round, the native of Serbia took a super-tiebreaker, 10-2, from Villiers to close out the individual win.
The Toreros will look to break its two match skid tomorrow against Sacramento State. First serve is set for 12 p.m. PT at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis.
