The USD golf team, coming off its best season in program history, will have four players competing in the prestigious 2010 U.S. Amateur Championship at the end of the month. Toreros Alex Ching (Honolulu, HI), Kenneth McCready (Placerville, CA), Jason Shano (Scottsdale, AZ) and Gunner Wiebe (Denver, CO) have all qualified for the championship which will be contested at Chambers Bay Golf Course (par 70; 7,712 yards) in University Place, Washington. All four Toreros recently advanced out of Sectional Qualifying which was 36 holes of stroke play.
"I'm very excited that USD will be represented at the U.S. Amateur by four of our players," stated head coach Tim Mickelson. "I'm sure they will all perform very well and I would not be surprised to see all of them advance to the match play portion of the event. It's going to be an exciting week for them and everyone involved with USD golf."
The U.S. Amateur Championship is open to amateurs who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4. The Championship will begin with 312 players competing over two days (August 23-24) of stroke play, with the top 64 players advancing to match play. All matches are scheduled for 18 holes except the final match. The scheduled 36-hole championship final match is Sunday, August 29. The event will be broadcast on NBC and the Golf Channel worldwide. Air times are to be determined and will be posted on the USGA website when they become available.
