Sept. 5, 2010

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego dropped a heart breaker Sunday evening after Marcelo Carminatti tied the match 2-2 against the Aztecs on an acrobatic header in the 81st minute from 10 yards out. In the 83rd minute, junior midfielder Charles Blasé slide tackled Aztec Khadim Diouf in USD's penalty box giving SDSU a penalty kick opportunity which they took full advantage of when Raymundo Reza took a right footed shot to the lower left corner in the 84th minute to give San Diego State the 3-2 win.

After two shots that hit the crossbar early in the first half, the Aztecs jumped out to a 1-0 lead just before the end of the first half when Kody Duff sent the ball into Raymundo Reza, Reza flipped it over to Khadim Diouf who was nine yards out and took a left-footed shot to score.

Less than one minute into the second half, USD miscleared a ball near midfield. Aztec Jordan Ongaro touched the ball on an attempt at the goal and didn't make solid contact as the ball continued towards Reza and from 50 yards out, fired off a shot over the head of Torero keeper Michael D'Arrigo who was out of position giving San Diego State a 2-0 lead.

The Toreros bounced back in the 65th minute when USD took a free kick in Aztec territory and gained possession of a loose ball of a header. Delgado wrangled in the ball and passed to a waiting Stephen Posa who knocked in a header from six yards out lifting the Toreros to a 2-1 deficit.

The tying goal came in the 81st minute when sophomore midfielder Dan Delgado sent a ball in from the far side of the field sailing over the heads of Aztec defenders to Marcelo Carminatti who was in mid-air and made contact on a header. The ball flew to the far corner of the net past Aztec keeper Brad Byrns tying the match a 2-2.

In the 84th minute, a hard foul committed by Charles Blase in USD's penalty box against Diouf brought the match to a halt as the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Aztecs. Reza Raymundo took the right footed shot that traveled low and to the left past D'Arrigo giving the lead back to San Diego State, 3-2.

USD had one solid look prior to the end of the match but was unable to connect and send the match into overtime. This is the fifth straight time the visiting team has won when USD and SDSU have faced each other.

San Diego out-shot the Aztecs 15-6 in the match and had two corner kicks to SDSU's one. USD committed only nine fouls to the Aztec's 19.

The Toreros will travel back east this week to the Dartmouth Invitational to face host Dartmouth University and Holy Cross. The Toreros will take on Dartmouth on Friday, September 10 at 4:00 p.m. pacific time followed by Holy Cross on Sunday, September 12 at 8:30 a.m. pacific time.
