SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sam Child had a game-high 19 points and Dominique Conners added in 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of San Diego women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game with a 62-57 loss to Santa Clara University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Leavey Center.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 9-7 overall and fall to 0-3 in the WCC. With the win, the Broncos improve to 6-10 overall and move to 2-0 in the WCC.
Child scored her 19 points on 9-for-18 shooting form the field, while Conners scored her 17 points on 6-for-17 shooting from the floor. Emily Hatch pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, and she chipped in with four points. As a team, USD shot .393 from the field and out rebounded the Broncos 38-34.
In the first half, it was a close battle as the teams were trading basket-for-basket over the first 14 minutes of action with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team having a lead bigger than four. Then with USD leading 21-19 with 3:55 to go, a Child lay-up ignited a 7-2 San Diego run that gave USD its biggest lead of the game at 28-21 with 2:14 remaining in the half. The Broncos then closed out the final two minutes on a 9-0 run to take a 30-28 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Broncos would slowly begin to pull ahead and eventually took a 10-pont lead at 48-38 with 9:40 to go. After trading baskets over the next six minutes of action, a pair of Conners free throws jump started a 6-0 Toreros run that was capped on a Morgan Woodrow lay-up to pull San Diego to within three at 53-50 with 1:24 to go. The Toreros could get no closer than three for the rest of the way before falling by the final of 62-57.
The Toreros will look to snap their four-game losing skid on Saturday as they remain in the Bay Area and take on the University of San Francisco Dons in a 2 p.m. WCC game inside of War memorial Gym.
