(San Diego, CA) - The USD Toreros (4-1; 2-0 PFL) earned their second straight league victory with today's 42-0 homecoming/family weekend win over the visiting Davidson Wildcats (2-2; 0-1 PFL) before 3,764 fans at Torero Stadium. Davidson came into the game averaging 26.3 points and 441 yards of offense, but the Torero defense played the key role in today's victory as they limited Davidson to just 178 yards of offense and zero points.
The Torero offense and special teams continued their solid play as they scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters to account for the 42 point total. Quarterback Mason Mills served up another outstanding game as he completed 16-of-24 passes for 191 yards and 3 touchdowns. In the first quarter he connected on scoring plays to fullback Nick Scudellari (21 yards) and wide receiver John McGough (38 yards).
In the second quarter, with Davidson reaching the San Diego 16 yard line and threatening to score, defensive tackle Bennie Harris forced a fumble by Sherrod Davis that was scooped up in the end zone by Loka Kanongataa. Six plays and 80 yards later it was Mills who found Sam Scudellari open for a 10-yard touchdown reception and 21-0 lead with 4:19 left in the half. Following the kickoff, Davidson's Jonathan Carkhuff was sacked by Blake Oliaro and this time Mario Kurn recovered the fumble on the Davidson 8-yard line. On his second rush, Kenny James found the end zone from 4-yards out for a 28-0 intermission lead.
The second half started off with an incredible 95-yard kickoff return by Kenny James for a touchdown and 35-0 lead. Mills closed out the game's scoring with 4:47 left in the third on a 5-yard run. Kicker Mike Levine converted his sixth straight PAT kick for the final 42-0 score.
For the game USD totaled 395 yards of offense (235 passing, 160 rushing). James led the ground game with 61 yards rushing on 16 carries, while Kenslow Smith added 52 yards on 11 runs and JP Bolwahnn added 30 yards on 7 rushes. Nine different receivers caught passes with Brandon White (4-for-54) and Sam Scudellari (4-for-31, 1 TD) leading the way.
The defense was a true team effort with close to 30 different players accounting for at least one tackle. Troy McClelland led the way with 5 stops, and was followed by Robbie Bethard, Zach Dunaj and Thomas Cobbs each with 4. Andrew Bakhtiari totaled two quarterback sacks (-20 yards) and added a quarterback hurry. Free safety Joey York added an interception. Davidson's Carkhuff finished 26-43 for 180 yards. The Torero defense held the Wildcats to -2 yards rushing.
The Toreros look to continue their winning ways next Saturday when they travel to Indiana to take on Valparaiso.
