PORTLAND, Ore. - Both senior striker Stephanie Ochs and freshman midfielder Mariah Butera tallied one goal each to help propel the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 West Coast Conference win over the University of Portland Friday evening.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 7-7-0 overall, move to 2-1-0 in the WCC and have now snapped a seven-match losing streak to the four-time defending WCC champion Pilots. With the loss, the Pilots fall to 5-7-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the WCC.
The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as in the 36th minute of action Ochs tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Ochs was 20 yards out, and rocked off a shot from the top of the goal box, and the ball sailed right past the Portland goalkeeper to give USD a 1-0 edge.
San Diego continued to push forward, as in the 58th minute of action, Butera tallied her second goal of the season. Ochs sent cross to Butera, who corralled the ball on the far right of the field, and she then punched a laser strike into the back of the net to give USD a 2-0 lead.
The Pilots then managed to spoil the shutout in the 61st minute of action, as Michelle Cruz sent a pass to Kaila Cameli, and she then crossed the ball to Micaela Capelle, who was able to redirect the ball with her head into the back of the net to put the match at its final of 2-1.
Senior goalkeeper Courtney Parsons picked up the win in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded five saves. Hailee DeYoung was saddled with the loss in goal for the Pilots, as she allowed two goals and recorded one save.
USD was outshot 14-6, but the Toreros had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host the Gaels of Saint Mary's College in a 7:30 p.m. WCC match inside the friendly confines of Torero Stadium.
