BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell University scored 20 unanswered points to snap the University of San Diego football team's four-game winning streak with a 48-24 Pioneer Football League game Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the PFL. With the win, the Camels improve to 4-3 overall and move to 3-2 in the PFL.
Ken James led the Toreros offense with 119 rushing yards and one touchdown. Sam Hoekstra had 62 receiving yards on the afternoon on four receptions. Blake Oliaro had seven tackles and one fumble recovery for a touchdown, while Mario Kurn and Zach Dunaj both had a productive day on the defensive side of things as well with 10 tackles apiece.
The first half was an offensive shootout, with the Toreros grabbing the early momentum. On the second play of the game, Oliaro recovered a fumble from Campbell's quarterback Braden Smith at the 12-yard line and sleep walked into the end zone for an easy score to give USD a 7-0 lead.
Campbell then responded as they marched 74 yards down the field and capped off their drive with a 24-yard touchdown run by Carl Smith to even the score at 7-all. The back and forth affair continued as San Diego then responded with a 12-play 32-yard drive to score a season-best 44-yard field goal by Mike Levine to take a 10-7 lead.
The Fighting Camels then scored on back-to-back possessions, a Braden Smith 21-yard touchdown run and a Jordan Cramer 26-yard touchdown run, to take the momentum and a 21-10 lead.
San Diego responded with their first touchdown offensive touchdown of the game in the second quarter, as Mason Mills threw a 14-yard pass to Hoekstra, who danced his way over the final five yards into the end zone, to cut the deficit to 21-17 with 9:11 to go in the quarter, giving the Toreros a bit of momentum.
Campbell then grabbed that momentum right back heading into the break, as they managed to drive 80-yards on eight plays over 1:16 to score a 3-yard touchdown run by Cramer to take a 28-11 lead in to halftime.
The Toreros then came out in the second half and began to shred up the Campbell defense on the ground, as Ken James cut the lead back down to four at 21-17 with a dazzling 39-yard touchdown run. James broke through two tackles, then hit some daylight on the right side of the field and out ran all the Campbell secondary to score the touchdown.
But that is as close as the Toreros would come, as Campbell went on to score 20 unanswered points to claim the 48-24 victory.
San Diego will have a bye next week, and then return to action on Nov. 5, as they travel to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Dayton Flyers in a 10 a.m. PFL contest.
