PROVO, Utah - Senior midfielder Elissa Magracia's goal in the 56th minute of action, lifted the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 West Coast Conference win Saturday afternoon aver WCC newcomer Brigham Young University.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 11-7-0 overall, and move into first place in the WCC standings with a 6-1-0 overall record, just two points in front of No. 10 Santa Clara University. USD also extends their season-high winning streak to six. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 10-5-3 overall, 4-2-1 in the WCC and they saw their four-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
In the 55th minute of play, the Toreros defense cleared the ball down the left side of the field, in an attempt to get it to Stephanie Ochs. However a BYU defender got a leg on it, and redirected the ball into the center of the field. Magracia then took control of the ball, split a pair of defenders and rifled off a shot that was saved by the Cougar goalkeeper, then the rebound came back to Magracia who fired off another shot that was blocked by the BYU defense, and on the third attempt, Magracia had not trouble burring the ball into the back of the net to give USD the 1-0 victory.
Ochs had a near goal come in the second half as well, as Kelley McCloskey crossed the ball into the center of the goal box, where Ochs got her head on it, but the ball flew just over the cross bar to give BYU a sign of relief.
Magracia led the Toreros offensive attack as she had a team-leading five shots, four on frame, while Ochs also had a good day taking three shots, one on goal.
USD and BYU were even in shot attempts at 9-9, but USD held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Courtney Parsons picked up the shutout win in goal for the Toreros, as she did not allow a goal and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, McKinzie Olson, was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as she allowed one goal and recorded five saves.
San Diego will return to action on Friday, as they close out the regular season in a huge WCC match against No. 10 Santa Clara live on ESPNU. This match will have WCC championship implications on the line, as both teams will be battling for the WCC crown.
