SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's basketball team kicked off the 2011-2012 regular season with a commanding 80-56 victory at home against Cal State San Marcos on Friday night. Senior Morgan Woodrow led all players with 18 points, while Amy Kame added 16 points off the bench for USD.
USD was able to spread the offensive wealth around as 10 players scored for the Toreros on the night, including three in double figures. The Toreros (1-0) outshot Cal State San Marcos (0-3) 46.6 percent to 26.6 percent in the contest as well, helping USD overcome a 36% night from the free throw line.
The Toreros got out to an early lead and never looked back, holding the lead the entire game with the exception of a 4-4 tie after two minutes of play. USD gradually stretched their lead over the course of the first half before closing out the half on a 16-4 run that put them up 49-28.
Coming out in the second half, it was more of the same for the Toreros as they stretched their lead to a game-high 28 points with a 75-47 lead at the 4:17 mark before eventually wrapping up the win.
Woodrow was nearly perfect from the field on the night, going 7-for-8 and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Senior Dominique Conners chipped in with 12 points and a pair of assists to go along with some stellar defense. Near the end of the second half, Conners stripped Megan Conroy in the backcourt on consecutive possessions and converted the layups.
Freshman Sophia Ederaine proved to be a defensive force down low as she registered five blocks on the night to go along with seven points and seven rebounds coming off the bench. Kameron Knutson grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and added four points.
Justine Chacon scored 12 points to lead the Cougars, while Michel'La Logan contributed 11 points.
The Toreros now travel to Cheney, Wash. where they will face Eastern Washington on Thursday, Nov. 17th for a 6:05 pm tipoff.
