SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's basketball team kicked off their season with an 87-48 victory over San Diego Christian in an exhibition Saturday afternoon from Jenny Craig Pavilion. Senior guard Morgan Woodrow led all players with 19 points on the day, while freshman Sophia Ederaine added 15 points off the bench.
The Toreros opened up an 11-point lead within the first seven minutes of play when Woodrow, who scored 15 of her 19 points in the first half, knocked down a jumper that put USD up 16-5 at the 13:05 mark in the first half. They wasted little time in stretching that lead to 15 on a free throw by Katelyn McDaniel that gave the Toreros a 20-5 advantage with just over 12 minutes in the half.
San Diego Christian managed to chip away at USD's lead and eventually brought the game with 10 points after a Michelle Gonzalez three with five and a half minutes to play, making the score 28-18.
That would be as close as the Hawks would get for the remainder of the contest as USD closed out the first half leading 40-22.
Thanks to the Toreros' 53.1 percent (34-64) shooting from the field in the game, USD opened the second half with a dominating 20-3 run that spanned the first 10 minutes of the half and increased their lead to 62-25 at the 10:52 mark. From there it was all Toreros as they kept the pressure on, increasing their lead to a game-high 41 points when Ederaine put in a layup with 23 seconds remaining that gave USD an 87-46 lead.
Klara Wischer grabbed a team-high eight rebounds as the Toreros outrebounded San Diego Christian 53-38 overall. Dominique Connors scored 13 points, while tying Amy Kame for the game-lead with six assists. Katelyn McDaniel was the final Torero in double figures with her 10 points and four rebounds.
Brittany Robinson led San Diego Christian with 15 points, with Brittany Daniel pitching in with 12 points of her own and Jermani Stewart grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.
The Toreros officially open the 2011-2012 season at home on Friday, Nov. 11th when they host Cal State San Marcos at 7:00 pm in Jenny Craig Pavilion.
