USD Runs Past Cal Poly

Dec. 17, 2011

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 22-point effort from senior guard Morgan Woodrow, and a 20-point outing from senior guard Dominique Conners, the University of San Diego women's basketball team cruised its way to a 69-52 win over visiting Cal Poly Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the win, the Torero improve to 8-2 overall, have won their third consecutive game, and have matched the second best start in program history with the 2006-07 team. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 3-7 overall and have lost four in a row.

Woodrow scored her game-high 22 points on 8-for-19 shooting, while managing to pull down seven rebounds, while Conners scored her 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting. And with her 20 points, Conners has now moved into third all-time on the USD career-scoring charts, passing former Torero great Sam Child. The final Torero in double figures was senior guard Izzy Chilcott, who scored 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the field. Freshman forward, Sophia Ederaine recorded four blocks, and as a team, USD recorded 10. The Toreros shot .448 from the field, and were even in rebounds at 42 apiece.

In the first half, a Conners lay-up sparked an 11-3 San Diego run over the first 3:47 of action to give USD all the momentum. After a Cal Poly 3-pointer by Jonae Ervin, the Toreros put together an 14-1 run that was sparked on a Woodrow 3-pointer and capped on a Conners jumper to give USD a 25-7 lead with 9:09 to go. Cal Poly just could not recover, as USD continued to score at will, closing out the final nine minutes on a 20-12 run to go into the break up 45-19, as the Toreros swarming defense held the Mustangs to just 17% shooting in the first half.

In the second half, it was a back and forth affair as both teams appeared to be trading basket-for-basket over the first half of action. Finallyvwith USD leading 51-29, a Conners lay-up ignited a 8-3 run to give USD its biggest lead of the game at 59-33 with 10:11 to go. USD then simply cruised its way to victory, as this deficit proved to be too much for the Mustangs to overcome.

Cal Poly was led by Kristiana Santiago, who scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Santiago had been averaging 21.6 ppg, and USD's post players Felicia Wijenberg, Sophia Ederaine, Kameron Knutson and Katelyn McDaniel held her to just one point in the first half, before she scored 12 in the second frame. As a team, the Mustangs shot .262 for the game.

The Toreros will return to action on Dec. 28, when they open play in the annual Maggie Dixon Surf N Slam Classic against Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m.
