LAS VEGAS, NV - The University of San Diego men's basketball team fell to the University of South Alabama 68-62 on Thursday afternoon from The SouthPoint Arena in Las Vegas. Despite 18 points from Chris Manresa and 17 from Darian Norris, the Toreros (5-7) were unable to overcome a huge rebounding edge held by the Jaguars. South Alabama outrebounded USD 44-24 overall in the contest.
South Alabama jumped out to an early lead as they went up 10-2 within the first four minutes of action. The Toreros battled back to tie it at 20-20 on layup from Camreron Miles at the 11:06 mark and then took the lead when Norris knocked down a jumper to put USD up 22-20. A Manresa dunk at 5:01 increased the USD lead to 27-20 as the Toreros held South Alabama scoreless for nearly eight minutes. The Jaguars chipped away before the first half ended in a 33-30 USD lead.
In the second half, the Toreros held the lead for the majority of the half until South Alabama finally wrestled the lead back and took a 56-55 advantage with 5:12 remaining in the game. The Toreros immediately answered and took back the lead when Norris connected on the last of his three three-pointers, putting USD up 58-57 at the 4:50 mark. However, that would be the last lead the Toreros would have as South Alabama closed out the contest with an 11-0 run over the final minutes.
Freddie Goldstein and Mychal Ammons led the Jaguars (8-3) with 17 points apiece, while Augustine Rubit tallied a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Chris Anderson pitched in for the Toreros with four points and a game-high nine assists.
The Toreros look to bounce back when they open West Coast Conference play on Dec. 31st at BYU with a 3:00pm (PST) tip.
