IRVINE, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's basketball team fell at UC Irvine, 99-79 on Saturday night. Freshman guard Christopher Anderson led the Toreros with 14 points and three assists off the bench, while Ken Rancifer and Darian Norris added 13 points apiece.
The Toreros (4-3) fell behind right out of the gate as the Anteaters opened up a double-digit lead within the first five minutes of play. Behind 74 percent shooting from the field in the first half, UC Irvine pulled ahead and never looked back. A three by Rancifer at the 19:12 mark that put USD up 3-2 was the only lead the Toreros would have in the contest.
Leading 26-17 with 9:25 remaining the first half, UC Irvine (1-6) put together a 17-6 run that gave them a 43-23 lead. That margin would stand as the first half wrapped up with UC Irvine holding a 54-34 advantage.
In the second half, UC Irvine kept the Torero offense in check as the Anteaters stretched their lead to a game-high 38 points with an 85-47 lead at the 8:13 mark.
The Toreros were without starting center Chris Manresa, who did not play due to injury. John Sinis added 10 points and five rebounds.
UC Irvine had five players in double figures on the night as Michael Wilder led all players with 19 points, while Chris McNealy scored 16 and Will Davis II added 15. Adam Folker chipped in with 11 points and Daman Starring had 10.
The Toreros return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 7th when they welcome cross-town rival San Diego State to the Jenny Craig Pavilion for a 7:00 pm contest.
