LONG BEACH, Calif.- The University of San Diego women's rowing team concluded their fall racing schedule on Sunday by collecting a total of seven victories in various races at the Long Beach Christmas Regatta, hosted by the Long Beach Rowing Association. Under clear skies and sixty-degree temperatures, the Toreros kicked off the morning with a win from the novice four A boat (E. Mayer, K. Bosch, K. De Salvo, T. Maxwell, A. Gabbard) as they finished with a time of 3:06.9.
The novice eights followed that up by finishing in the top three out of five spots as the novice Eight A boat (E. Mayer, K. Bosch, A. Gabbard, T. Maxwell, K. De Salvo, G. Daly, A. Ward, A. Heller, R. Taylor) posted a time of 2:52.4. Followed in second place at 2:55.8 was the B boat (L. Eisenberg, H. Bucklin, M. Bradford, C. Bridges, E. Peterson, Z. Bourgazas, D. Evans, N. Parker, K. Grey). Coming in third with a 3:07.2 was the C boat (L. Hill, S. Smith, T. Mitchell, K. Jenkins, B. Gouletas, D. Muhammad-Menzies, T. Carmona, B. Burgos, A. Maddox).
The varsity four A boat (K. Soper, B. Lamb, M. Geesman, S. Jegat, C. Olson) hit the water by winning their race by nearly 12 seconds with a time of 3:01.5. In the race that followed, the Toreros' varsity four B (K. Jones, M. Cole, M. Elrich, J. Travis, L. Dornes) and D boats (K. Aguilar-Varing, E. Halden, L. Rollins, S. Romine, L. Hitomi) came in first and second with times of 3:07.3 and 3:13.1, respectively.
The Toreros continued to pile up the wins as the day progressed. The varsity eights nailed down the top three spots in their race as the A boat (K. Soper, B. Lamb, M. Geesman, L. Dornes, J. Travis, M. Elrich, S. Jegat, S. Romine, C. Olson) posted a time of 2:43.6, followed closely behind by the B boat (K. Jones, M. Cole, T. Albertini, K. De Salvo, T. Maxwell, L. Hitomi, E. Halden, W. McCormack, L. Rollins) with a time of 2:46.9 and the C boat (A. Yamamoto, M. Browning, H. Ward, T. Kendzierski, A. Banville, M. McNeill, J. Oto, K. Bosch, C. Lucas) at 2:48.4.
Rounding out the day's competition for USD were the pairs and doubles. The Toreros had six pairs in action in two races, complimented by another two doubles. All boats represented USD magnificently, dominating the top three places throughout all their events.
Aside from being the first sprinting action the team has seen this fall, the 850 meter course was shorter than the standard 1,000 meters.
With their success on the day, the Toreros displayed their depth from top to bottom as a total of six novice boats and eight varsity boats competed in addition to the eight pairs. Despite missing some key members of their various boats due to injury, the Toreros proved that their tireless recruiting has paid off with newcomers that are ready to step in and compete right away.
