(Newport Coast, CA) - The 25th ranked USD men's golf team is leading the Battle at the Beach tournament after the first of three rounds. The Toreros shot a team score of 348 (-2) on the strength of senior Kenneth McCready's tournament low round of 65. McCready was one shot better than Washington's Ty Chambers (66) at the Resort at Pelican Hill's Ocean North Course (par 70; 6,900 yards). USD holds a two-stroke lead over 14th-ranked Augusta State (350), with Arizona State and Washington close on their heels at 351.
Junior Alex Ching is tied for 5th after firing a 68. He is followed by teammates Scott Brace (70), Ben Murray (71), Gunner Wiebe (74) and Manav Shah (76). Torero Leon Knoll, playing as an individual, carded a 73.
UCLA, the 2nd-ranked team in the nation, is tied for 5th with 12th-ranked Arkansas at 353. Second round play begins tomorrow at 7:00 am. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
