SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego baseball team fell to the Connecticut Huskies 17-0 on Monday afternoon from Cunningham Stadium. The Toreros dropped to 3-7 with the loss, while the 19th-ranked Huskies improved to 5-4 on the year.
Connecticut got on the board right away when George Springer's double to centerfield brought home Mike Nemeth, who had doubled right before him, to give the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
The Huskies kept the pressure on Torero starter Chris Jensen in the third by scoring four runs in the inning as Nemeth plated shortstop Nick Ahmed with a single and Doug Elliot drove in three runs later in the inning with a double to left center, ending Jensen's day at 2 2/3 innings.
Connecticut posted two more runs in the fifth before erupting for a seven-run sixth inning that included nine-straight hits.
The Huskies added two more runs in the seventh and another in the ninth to close out the Toreros.
Rightfielder Scott Schauer led the Toreros with a 2-for-4 day at the plate, while secondbaseman Tony Strazzara added a single and Kalei Hanawahine chipped in with a pinch-hit single of his own.
Springer, Nemeth and Eliot each had four hits apiece for the Huskies with Eliot and Springer driving in four runs each. Designated hitter L.J. Mazzilli and thirdbaseman Ryan Fuller added three RBIs apiece.
Jensen (0-3) took the loss for the Toreros, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out one, while Greg Nappo (2-0) earned his second win of the season for Connecticut, going six innings allowing no runs with two hits while striking out three and walking three.
USD and Connecticut will continue their four-game series on Thursday, March 10th at 2:00 p.m. at Cunningham Stadium.
