SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a 15-hit offensive explosion and a dominating pitching performance, the University of San Diego baseball team (8-22) snapped its four-game losing streak with a 10-0 win over nearby Point Loma (19-16) Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
San Diego wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across the only run they would need in the bottom of the first inning. Kevin Muno led off the inning with a single to left filed. Muno then stole second and moved to third on a Dillon Checkal ground out to the second baseman. Zack Kometani then drove in Muno with a RBI ground out to the shortstop to give USD a 1-0 lead.
USD then doubled its lead in the bottom of the third inning, as they scored one run on one hit. Kalei Hanawahine led off the inning reaching on a error by the first baseman and moved to third on Julian Duran's single to left field. Muno then brought in Hanawahine on a RBI ground out to to the shortstop to move the score to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Toreros again doubled their lead, as they scored two runs on two hits. The USD runs came on Bryan Haar sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Kometani, who had singled, and a wild pitch to move the USD advantage to 4-0.
The Toreros then went on to score one run in the fifth inning, three runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh to cap the scoring for the day.
Offensively for the Toreros, Kris Bryant led the way as he went 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Muno, Checkal, Corey LeVier, Scott Schauer and Duran all went 2-for-4.
Paul Paez (3-2) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed no runs on four hits, while striking out four in 5.0 innings of work. PLNU's Kelsen Boyer (2-1) was saddled with the loss for the Sea Lions as he allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in 5.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they resume West Coast Conference play with a 3 p.m. game against Pepperdine University at Cunningham Stadium.
