PALO ALTO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team could not get past the ninth-ranked Stanford Cardinal Wednesday afternoon from Taube Family Tennis Center, losing their third-straight by a score of 5-2. The 29th-ranked Toreros (15-5) have lost all five of their matches to top-10 teams this season, while the Cardinal (12-5) won their fourth-straight.
With a tweaked doubles lineup that featured two pairs that had yet to play a match together this season, the Toreros were unable to get any momentum going in doubles play, dropping each match to Stanford. Dean Jackson and Thibaut Visy played for the first time together at No. 1, losing to 4th-ranked Bradley Klahn and Ryan Tacher 8-3. Also pairing for the first time this season were Nikola Bubnic and Abdullah Hashem, who fell at No. 3 to Jamin Ball and Ted Kelly by a score of 8-7.
No. 2 doubles pitted Nils Schive and Clarke Spinosa against Matt Kandath and Dennis Lin. Schive and Spinosa had previously won two matches together in the fall, but were unable to pull out the win against Kandath and Lin, losing 8-3 at No. 2.
Singles play proved more positive for the Toreros, however their two singles victories came with the final two decisions of the day after Stanford had already clinched the win with a 7-6, 6-3 victory by Kandath over Hashem at No. 6.
Bubnic and No. 106 Spinosa were the two USD victors on the day as Bubnic held on for a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (8)defeat of 32nd-ranked Thacher at No. 2, his second over a ranked opponent this year, and Spinosa outlasted No. 60 Alex Clayton 5-7, 6-1, 7-5, for his second win over a ranked opponent as well.
USD returns home on Wednesday, April 13th for their final home match of the season, a 3:00 p.m. meeting with UC Irvine at Hogan Tennis Center.
