FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 non-conference loss to Cal State Fullerton Thursday evening at Titan Stadium.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 5-5-0 overall and have now lost three consecutive matches. With the win, the Titans improve to 5-4-1 overall and have now won four consecutive matches.
The Titans scored the game-winner in the 39th minute of action, as Rebecca Wilson put back a blocked shot by Ann Marie Tangorra in the box, punching it through traffic at the left post for the 1-0 lead.
Fullerton then tallied the second goal of the evening just 43 seconds into the second half, as Tangorra lofted a shot into the upper left corner out of the reach of the Torero goalkeeper to put the match at its final of 2-0.
Senior striker Stephanie Ochs led the Toreros with four shots on the night and actually had the first chance to score for either team, as just six minutes in, she streaked down the left side and bent a ball from a tight angle that just caught the crossbar and bounced out.
Out of the break, the Toreros came out firing, taking five of the first six shots of the half and almost breaking up the shutout in the 61st minute as Brittany Held broke in off a corner on the left side and fired to the far post only to have the Titan goalkeeper Lindsey Maricic get a hand on it and the defense clear the ball. Ochs had another chance just two minutes later, but that one was also gobbled up by Maricic as the Titans held off the increased pressure from the USD offense.
The Toreros were outshot 13-9, but USD held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Courtney Parsons was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as she allowed one goal and recorded two saves. Maricic was credited with the win in goal for the Titans as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they host No. 23 UC Irvine in a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
