SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's soccer team opened up West Coast Conference play with a 2-0 shutout of Loyola Marymount Wednesday night from Torero Stadium. The Toreros (4-4-0, 1-0-0 WCC) battled through a physical contest that featured six yellow cards to earn the victory, while Loyola Marymount dropped to 2-7-0 overall and 0-1-0 in WCC play with the loss.
Both sides exchanged offensive rallies as the match opened up. USD barely missed out on an early scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute when junior midfielder James Cohn took a pass in the box and delivered a sharp header that was narrowly snagged by Lion keeper Jack McCormack, preserving the scoreless tie.
Soon after, in the 28th minute, Cohn corralled a pass from Dan Delgado in traffic just outside the left side of the box and chipped a shot past McCormack from about seven yards out for the first goal of the match and Cohn's first of the season, giving the Toreros a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half the Toreros took control offensively, outshooting LMU 10-5 in the period, including the match's second goal. In the 65th minute, Delgado weaved a pass through the Lion defense across the pitch to Elijah Galbraith-Knapp on the right edge of the box. Galbraith-Knapp drew the LMU defense toward the corner and found a streaking Stephen Posa alone in front of the goal for an empty net header and Posa's second score of the season, putting the Toreros up 2-0.
USD held a decisive 19-10 edge in shots in the match as junior forward Patrick Wallen led the Toreros with four shots on the night. Posa, Daniel Meade, and Conor McFadden each pitched in with three shots apiece, while Delgado contributed two assists along with Galbraith-Knapp's one assist.
