SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Three University of San Diego women's basketball players scored in double figures including a career-high 19 from sophomore guard Amy Kame, but it wasn't enough, as the Toreros dropped their first WCC game of the season in a 62-53 loss to WCC newcomer Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 12-4 overall, 3-1 in the WCC, while also seeing a three-game winning streak snapped. With the win, the Cougars improve to 16-3 overall and 5-1 in the WCC.
Kame scored her game-high 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field, while pulling down three rounds and recording one assist. Dominique Conners was the second USD player to score in double figures, as she had 12 on 4-of-12 shooting from the field. The final San Diego player to score in double figures was Morgan Woodrow who scored 11 on 3-of-16 shooting, while pulling down 10 rebounds to post a double-double. Felicia Wijenberg also had a good game as she scored nine points. As a team, USD shot .302 from the field, and out rebounded the Cougars 40-36.
The Toreros came out firing on all cylinders as a Kame jumper ignited a 6-0 Torero run over the first three minutes of action to give USD the early momentum. The Cougars then responded with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 7-6 with 12:36 to go. After a USD basket by Conners, BYU managed to put together a 9-0 run to take a 16-8 lead with 10:52 to go.
The Cougars would manage to build a 9-point lead twice in the half, with the final time coming at the 3:18 mark to give BYU a 28-19 edge. USD then subbed in Conners, who was in foul trouble, and the Toreros closed out the half on a 10-2 run to pull back to within on at 30-29 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Toreros were out of sync right out of the gate, and BYU took full advantage as they went on a 10-0 run over the first four minutes of play to take an 11-point lead at 40-19 with 16:01 to go, forcing USD into a timeout. The two teams would then trade basket-for-basket over the next nine minutes with the Cougars managing to hold onto a double-digit lead for a majority of this time frame.
USD then dug in and made one last push. With the Toreros trailing 51-40 with 8:45 to go, a Conner free throw sparked a 9-1 Torero run to pull San Diego back to within three at 52-49 with 3:40 to go. USD just could not get any closer, as they battled down to the wire, but the Cougars managed to hold on for dear life to claim this win.
For the Cougars, Lexi Eaton paced the scoring with a 16-point outing on 6-of-10 shooting, while both Dani Peterson and Kim Parker scored 10 points each. As a team, BYU shot .460 from the field.
USD will return to action on Thursday as they host the University of Portland in a 6 p.m. WCC game on nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
