Toreros Too Much for Dons

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Behind a 15-point effort from senior guard Morgan Woodrow, the University of San Diego women's basketball team picked up a 68-50 West Coast Conference win over the University of San Francisco Thursday evening at the War Memorial Gym.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 14-5 overall and move to 5-2 in the WCC. With the loss, the Dons fall to 4-18 overall and 2-7 in the WCC.

Woodrow led all scorers with her 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting from the field, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Felicia Wijenberg was the second of three USD players in double figures as she had 11 points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Dominique Conners was the final Torero in double figures as she had 10 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the field. As a team, USD shot 49.2% from the field and out rebounded the Dons 53-27.

In the first half, USD came out on fire as they opened the game with an 8-0 run over the first six minutes of action. The Toreros swarming defense, had the Dons' offense all out of sync. Finally, USF would score a basket at the 13:38 mark on a 3-pointer by Jamie Katuna.

San Diego then came right back, as an Izzy Chilcott lay-up sparked an 11-3 Torero run that saw four different players score at least two points to give USD its first double-digit lead of the game at 19-6 with 8:01 to go. The Toreros would go on to build up a lead as many as 21 on a Felicia Wijenberg lay-up with 3:45 to go, giving the Toreros a 29-8 lead. USD would then maintain that momentum and go into the break up by 17 at 31-14.

In the second half, USD quickly built up a 20-point margin on a Amy Kame jumper with 14:09 to go, giving the Toreros a 37-17 lead. USD then managed to maintain that margin for a majority of the frame, as they two teams began to trade basket-for-basket. San Diego would build up a lead to as many as 24 on a Katie Kuklok jumper with 13:23 to go. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 68-50 victory.

For the Dons, Jamie Kutuna led the team in scoring with 13 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field. Rhena Ale (12 points) and Baily Barbour (11 points) were the other two USF players in double figures. As a team, the Dons shot 28.8% from the field.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday as they host Pepperdine University in a 2 p.m. WCC game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
