Toreros fall to USF Dons 81-70

(San Diego, CA) - Freshman guard Johnny Dee scored a game-high 23 points on his way to setting a new USD scoring mark for Torero freshmen, but it wasn't enough as the visiting San Francisco Dons dealt the Toreros an 81-70 loss before 2,883 fans at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. With 353 points on the season, Dee moved past Gylan Dottin's previous record of 336 points (1988-89). San Francisco (17-10, 7-6 WCC) received a double-double from Perris Blackwell (18 points, 11 rebounds) and had a balanced attack with three other players in double figures.

For USD (10-15, 5-8 WCC), redshirt freshman John Sinis scored a season-high 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and freshman guard Christopher Anderson posted his second straight 15-point outing to go with 6 assists and a season-high 6 steals. Throw in 2 points from freshman center Simi Fajemisin and USD received 55 of their 70 points from their freshman class.

In the first half the visitor's took a 41-27 lead into the intermission break as they converted 53.3% of their shots (16-30) while the Toreros managed 11-of-26 shooting (42.3%). USF received a big boost from Angelo Caloiaro who had 14 of his 16 in the first half, including the team's first eight points. For USD, Sinis totaled 10 first half points which matched his previous season high.

In the second half USF extended their lead to as many as 16 points at 53-37 with 14:46 to go on a three-pointer by Jay Wey. Over the next 7:22 the Toreros went on a 19-9 run and stormed back behind the hot hand of Dee (13 points) to pull to within six points at 62-56 with 7:24 left. A Cody Doolin trey ended USD's 19-9 run and got the Dons back on track at the 6:55 mark and they would hold off the Toreros the rest of the way.

Besides Blackwell and Caloiaro, the Dons received 15 points each from guard Michael Williams and forward Cole Dickerson. USF made 9 three-pointers (25 attempts) and missed just one free throw on 17 attempts.

USD returns to the JCP this coming Thursday, Feb. 16th, to take on the Portland Pilots in a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
