USD concludes Crew Classic with trio of races

April 1, 2012

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's rowing team wrapped up the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday by competing in two grand finals and one petite final. The Toreros' varsity four and varsity eight posted the best finishes of the day by coming in fourth in their respective races.

With blustery conditions and patches of choppy water to navigate on Mission Bay, the varsity four competed in the first USD race of the day, the petite final. Temperatures hovered around the high 50s with broken cloud coverage as they clocked an 8:25.21 that put them behind Virginia (8:10.32), British Columbia (8:18.16), and Clemson (8:23.41). The Toreros finished ahead of Oregon State (8:30.17) and Texas (8:52.96).

Next up was the varsity eight competing in the grand final of the Sea World Cal Cup. The Toreros started the race slowly, sitting in sixth place through the first 1,500 meters. With the help of a strong sprint through the final 500 meters, USD passed Tulsa (7:22.09) and Iowa (7:22.37) to post a time of 7:21.69. The Toreros finished behind Duke (7:08.47), Oregon State (7:10.01), and Oklahoma (7:15.86).

The Toreros' final race of the day saw the open eight take sixth place in the grand final of the Carley Copley Cup as USD registered a time of 7:45.72 battling through a stiff crosswind.
