Toreros Drop Season-Opener to Pepperdine

MALIBU, Calif. -The University of San Diego women's soccer team dropped its season-opener, 4-2, to No. 10 Pepperdine University Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at TK Rokus Field.

The Waves (1-0-0) got on the scoreboard first, as in the fifth minute of action, Anisa Guajardo was able to control a pass off a throw in, to slip one past the USD defense, giving Pepperdine a 1-0 lead.

The Waves then doubled their lead 11 minutes later, as Lynn Williams scored a goal from the outside left corner of the goal box, off a pass from Guajardo, to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead.

The Toreros (0-1-0) then managed to cut the lead in half at the 32:05 mark, when USD newcomer, Emily Dillon, corralled a cross from junior forward Erica Peeplesand buried the ball into the lower left corner to move the score to 2-1.

The Waves regained a two-goal edge in the 41st minute of action, as Ana Pontes scored an unassisted goal into the upper right corner of the goal, giving Pepperdine a 3-1 edge heading into the break.

The Waves then added to their lead in the 52nd minute of play, as Guajardo scored her second goal of the match off a free kick from Michelle Pao, to move the score to 4-1.

San Diego then managed to cut the lead in half again in the 79th minute of action. Freshman Meggie Gulczynski was able to re-direct a through ball from sophomore midfielder Olivia Schultz, and booted the ball left-footed to the near post, putting the match at its final of 4-2.

McKenna Tollackwas saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros, as he allowed two goals, and recorded two saves. Pepperdine's Roxanne Barker Picked up the win in goal for the Waves as he allowed two goals and recorded seven saves.

USD was outshot 16-11, but the Toreros did manage to place nine of their 11 shots on frame. USD did have an advantage on corner kicks at a 4-0 margin.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday when they open their home portion of the schedule with a 1 p.m. non-conference match against Cal State Northridge inside the friendly confines of Torero Stadium.
