SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Toreros, looking to build off last season's success, will kick off the fall season against their cross-town rival San Diego State October 28th. The Aztecs, who were 26-34 last season and 12-12 in the Mountain West, lost only three players from last year's squad and expect to contend for the Mountain West championship in 2013.
The Toreros will travel to take on UC Irvine Nov. 3. The Anteaters went 31-25 last season and 13-11 in the Big West. Irvine returns a couple of key players from last year's squad in starting pitcher Andrew Thurman and 3B/OF Taylor Sparks. Thurman was the lone Anteater named to the 2012 All Big West first-team and Sparks was recently named the top prospect in the West Coast Summer League by Baseball America.
USD will conclude the three-game fall season when they meet UC Riverside on Nov. 10. The Highlanders, who went 22-32 and 9-15 in the Big West in 2012, look to bounce back from a tough season. Riverside only lost four seniors and features a pair of players who were honored for their performance in collegiate summer leagues. Second basemen Alex Rubanowitz was named to the West Coast League first-team and catcher Clayton Prestridge was named a second-team All-American by perfectgame.org for his play in the Prospect League.
All fall games will be played on the road due to the ongoing construction of Fowler Park, USD's new baseball facility, which will open in time for the spring season.
