LONG BEACH, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team (3-7) dropped a heart breaking 1-0 loss to No. 22 Long Beach State (7-3) Friday evening in a non-conference match at George Allen Smith Field.
The game-winning goal came in the 70th minute of action, as Elizabeth Lyons was streaking up the right side of the field, controlled a pass from Hannah Sanders, and was able to put the ball to the upper left corner of the goal and into the back of the net to lift LBSU to victory.
San Diego had several opportunities to score a goal, as four of their eight shots in the second half were on frame, unfortunately for the Toreros, LBSU's goalkeeper Marrina Meyers was there to make the save.
The Toreros and 49ers were even in shot attempts with 12 a piece, and the Toreros had a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
USD's McKenna Tollack was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros as she allowed one goal and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Meyers, picked up the win as she allowed no goals and recorded six saves.
Maria Butera led the Toreros offensive attack, as she took three shots, one on goal, while Taylor Housley and Sierra Ferreira tallied two shots each, and Erica Peeples, Emily Dillon, Meghan O'Rourke and Meggie Gulczynski all recorded one shot each to round off the USD offensive attack.
