SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The eighth-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball tram cruised its way to their 14th consecutive win, with a 3-0 victory over Gonzaga University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-14, 25-19, 25-17 win, the Toreros improve to 23-3 overall, move to 15-2 in the WCC and have now won 14 consecutive matches. With the loss, the Zags fall to 11-14 overall, and fall to 7-9 in the WCC.
USD will now return to action on Saturday, as they host BYU in the final regular-season match of the year, which will determine the WCC champion. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will air live on TheW.tv.
Sandra Lozic led all players with the 13 kills, while hitting for a .423 clip and she recorded five digs. Katie Hoekman also had a great match, as she recorded 13 kills on 14 swings, while committing no errors to hit for a .857 clip, and she recorded four blocks. The .857 hitting percentage is the second highest single-match percentage in program history. Jianna Bonomi (22 assists) and Rachel Alvey (18 assists) helped steer the USD offense to a team attack percentage of .364, while C'era Oliveira racked up a match-high 15 digs.
In the first set, the Toreros went right to work, as a Chloe Ferrari kill sparked a 9-3 run to open the frame, which also forced GU in an early timeout. Out of the break, a Gonzaga attack error sparked a 5-2 USD run, to again force the Zags into a timeout. USD never looked back, as they simply cruised their way to a 25-14 win.
In the second set, the Toreros again came out firing on all cylinders, as a GU attack error sparked a 7-3 Torero run. GU would then pull to within one at 8-7, however a Hoekman kill then sparked a 4-0 run to give USD a 12-7 lead, forcing the Bulldogs into a timeout. Out of the break, USD kept the pedal to the medal and went on to build up a 20-14 lead, to force GU into their final timeout. USD then cruised its way to a 25-19 win to go into the break up two-sets-to-none.
In the third and final set, Gonzaga kept things close in the early going, however USD was just too strong, as they used a 6-3 run halfway through the frame to take a commanding 15-8 lead, which forced the visitors into a timeout. USD then cruised its way to a 25-17 win to complete the sweep.
