Toreros Announce Baseball Coaching Changes

July 31, 2013

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego head baseball coach Rich Hill has announced changes to the Torero coaching staff beginning in the 2014 season. Both Ramon Orozco and Brad Marcelino will remain on the staff and move up into assistant coaching positions.

Orozco, who has been with the Torero baseball program for three last five seasons in various roles, will replace the recently departed Jay Johnson, who took the head coaching job at Nevada. Orozco has been serving as USD's first base coach the last few seasons, and will continue to assist Hill in all aspects of the game.

Orozco brings a wealth of coaching experience to the USD coaching staff as he was an assistant coach in Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League (HCBL). Orozco was in charge of the offense for the HCBL champion Kamuela Paniolos. His team led the league in homeruns and was second in total runs scored. Ramon has also been an assistant with the DuPage Dragons of the Central Illinois Collegiate Summer League. During his first season as a pitching coach, he helped guide them to the regular- season Co-Championship. During the season, Orozco helped the team post a franchise-best 25-19 overall record and the second lowest earned run average in the CICL.

Prior to work with Kamuela Paniolos and the DuPage Dragons, Orozco has served as an assistant coach for Glendale Community College. He served as the Vaqueros infield and first base coach. In addition to his coaching duties, Orozco served as an academic adviser and mentor to his players. Eight of his players moved onto four year universities and one player (Jason Botts) was selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Botts debuted with the Texas Rangers in 2005.

Orozco played his college baseball at Los Angeles Mission College and California Lutheran University. While at CLU he was a member of two Division III Western Regional teams. His senior year Orozco helped CLU win a Western Regional Championship and a College World Series appearance. CLU finished eighth in the final polls of 1998.

Orozco earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1999 from California Lutheran University. He also holds two masters degrees, one in Cross-Cultural Education that he earned in 2002 from National University, and the other is a Masters degree in Educational Administration from the University of La Verne that he received in 2005.

Marcelino will also move into a new role, as he is now the volunteer assistant coach for the Toreros. Marcelino has been with the Torero baseball program for the past two seasons as the director of baseball operations.

Prior to coming to USD, Marcelino coached at local La Costa Canyon High School for three years and helped the program become nationally ranked for the previous three years. He also coached in the Australian league and has had 20 of his former players go into professional baseball. Marcelino became an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles evaluating local talent in San Diego.

He played his collegiate baseball at Occidental College and California Lutheran University. After Cal Lu he played professionally and also attended Cleveland Indians Spring Training in 2004. He also currently still plays for the Great Britain National Team and in 2009 competed against International powerhouses such as Cuba, Japan, Puerto Rico, Korea, Venezuela and others. He also played in countries such as Italy, Germany, Holland, Spain, Croatia, Czech Republic and Israel among others. Marcelino is the founder of the North County Mavericks high school/college prep baseball program, which consists of 4th - 8th graders and is based out of North County San Diego.

Marcelino received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics for Business Management from Occidental College in 2003. Marcelino and his wife Johanna, along with their son Clayson currently reside in San Diego, CA.
