SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind another balanced offensive attack, the eighth-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised its way to a 3-0 win over the University of the Pacific Friday evening in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 win, the Toreros improve to 9-2 overall, move to 1-1 in the WCC and improve to 5-0 at home, including sweeping all but one opponent at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the WCC.
Alaysia Brown and Katie Hoekman led the way offensively for the Toreros, as they each had eight kills, with Brown hitting for a .375 clip and Hoekman hitting for a .467 clip. Both Sandra Lozic and Taylor Hollins had seven kills apiece, while C'era Oliveira had a match-high 14 digs. Both Jianna Bonomi and Rachel Alvey had 14 assists apiece in helping steer the Torero offense to a .269 attack percentage.
In the first set, the Tigers had back-to-back attack errors to give the Toreros the first two points. Then after Pacific got their first point, a Tiger attack error sparked a 4-0 Torero run that was capped on a Brown kill to give USD the early momentum and a 6-1 lead. Pacific would manage to cut the lead down to three at 8-5, but that is as close as they would get, as a Hoekman kill sparked a 11-4 San Diego run to give USD a 19-9 lead. San Diego never looked back, as they cruised their way to a 25-10 win.
In the second frame, it was a lot closer contest, as the Tigers managed to stay close to USD throughout the set. Both teams had the lead, and neither team had a lead bigger than two for a majority of the frame. Then with USD leading 19-16, Pacific would go on a 5-2 run to even tings up at 21-all, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the break, back-to-back kills by Hoekman and Alexa Banker sparked a 4-0 run to close things out, allowing USD to go into the break up two-sets-to-none.
In the third and final set, The Tigers again managed to keep things close, and even led in the early going. Then with the score knotted at 9-all, a Hollins kill sparked a 7-1 San Diego run to give USD all the momentum and a 16-10 lead, forcing the visitors into a timeout. Pacific could not recover form this deficit, as USD went on to complete the sweep with a 25-18 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they welcome Saint Mary's College to town for a 1 p.m. WCC match inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig pavilion.
