(San Francisco, Calif.) - The host USF Dons held on for a 64-62 home win over the visiting Toreros in a WCC contest at Memorial Gymnasium. USF guard Avry Holmes just canned the game-winning jumper from the right side with 0.5 seconds left in the game to break the 62-all tie. After a timeout USD attempted to inbounds the ball to Johnny Dee for a final shot at around the half court area, but the play failed. Holmes finished with a team-high 15 points, while USD was paced by Johnny Dee with 16 points.
Holmes played a key role in the final minute of play. After Johnny Dee made two free throws to pull USD to within 60-59 at the 1:01 mark, Holmes scored with 27 seconds left for a 62-59 advantage. He just beat the shot clock buzzer after some tough Torero defense. Christopher Anderson answered with a bucket inside to get USD within one again at 62-61. USF called for a timeout and on the inbounds play Thomas Jacobs stole the ball and was fouled. He made the first of two free throws to knot the score, but Holmes followed with a step-back jumper for the game-winner just before the buzzer.
Earlier in the second half the Toreros took their first lead on a Duda Sanadze jumper in the key for a 52-51 lead at 5:57. A Thomas Jacobs' steal led to a Christopher Anderson lay-in at the 4:46 mark to extend the advantage to 54-51. An Avry Holmes three from the left corner put USF back up 56-55 with 3:16 to go, but Simi Fajemisin got free inside to put USD back ahead 57-56. Holmes answered to put the Dons back ahead with 2:01 left.
At the half the score was tied at 36-all. Johnny Dee paced the Toreros with 12 points on some excellent outside shooting as he converted 4-of-6 threes. For the half the Toreros canned 7-of-12 threes and were a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. USF shot 50% from the field and was paced by Kruize Pinkins with 9 points on 3-for-3 shooting.
For the game Dee was followed by Christopher Anderson with 15 points and Duda Sanadze with 11. Chris Sarbaugh chipped in with 12 points. USD made 8-of-18 threes, but converted just 21-of-49 overall. For USF the Dons also got a big lift from Kruize Pinkins with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Toreros continue their four-game road swing next week in the Pacific Northwest with games at Gonzaga (Jan. 23rd, 7pm on ESPNU) and Portland (Jan. 25th, 1pm on TWC/ROOT/CSN).
