SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD men's soccer team (4-4-4) fell to Loyola Marymount (5-3-3) 1-0 Friday night at Torero Stadium. The Toreros outshot the Lions 14-11, but LMU capitalized with a 67th minute goal by Sebastian De Rada.
The Toreros held the shot advantage in both halves; 6-4 in the first and 8-7 in the second. Dave Musambi had four shots, coming close a few times, but couldn't find the back of the net.
The Lions lone goal came in the 67th minute on a strange play. After the ball was deflected, it looped over the Torero back line to De Rada's feet. The USD defenders raised their hands for an offsides call, but the call never came and De Rada slipped it into the lower right corner past Torero goalkeeper, Thomas Olsen.
Of the Toreros' 14 shots, five came on goal. Musambi led the offensive attack with four shot attempts. Torrey DeArmas and Jose Merlo, who made his first career start at USD, each had two shots.
Olsen made five saves but was saddled with the loss. Lions' keeper Paul Blanchette also had five saves and improved his record to 2-1-3.
The Toreros and Lions will meet again in conference play in the final match of the regular season, November 15 at LMU.
USD has the rest of the weekend off, but will begin WCC play next Friday when they host Saint Mary's at 7:00 p.m.
