SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Fueled by two late goals, the USD men's soccer team (5-4-4, 1-0-0) knocked off Saint Mary's (7-4-2, 0-1-1) 2-0 Friday evening at Torero Stadium. After neither team could score through the first 81 minutes, the Toreros finally found the back of the net in 82nd minute on a Connor Brandt left footer. Just 70 seconds later, Dave Musambi scored on a chip shot to extend the lead to 2-0 USD.
After both teams attempted seven first half shots, the score was knotted nil-nil at the half. The Toreros nearly scored in the 63rd minute after Musambi set up Michael Turner with a one-on-one with the Gael keeper after a beautiful back flip. However, Turner's shot hit off the left post and the scored remained 0-0.
The Toreros finally broke through in the final ten minutes. Josh Cintas set up Brandt in the 82nd minute and he was able to finish a left footer inside the near post from 18 yards out. Shortly after, the Toreros struck again when Parker Price delivered a nice through ball to Musambi, who chipped it over the Gaels' keeper, who was charging.
It was a big win for the Toreros, who had only scored three goals in their past seven matches. The Gaels entered Friday with the WCC's best record, but USD earned their fourth shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Thomas Olsen collected one save to improve his record to 5-4-4.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. when they face Pacific for the first time in program history.
