SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Sam Mattice once again paced the Toreros at the Bronco Invite Saturday morning. The freshman set a school record with a time of 20:51.82 and helped the Toreros earn a ninth place overall finish (out of 21 teams) in the 6k Invitational. Sophomore Malik Hayes had the top time for the men's team, finishing in 25:22.41 in the 8k Invitational.

"Samantha Mattice ran a fantastic race today" said USD Coach Will Guarino. "She had a great start and worked her way up as she passed runners during the 2nd half of the course."

For the women, following Mattice was Ashton Padberg (44th, 21:31.95), Julie Giannini (68th, 21:52.38), Andrea Hughes (82nd, 21:59.10), and Sydney Olagaray (117th, 22:31.01). Ashley Mitchell finished in 22:33.51 (123rd place), and behind her was Allison Lynch (132nd, 22:41.11), Sarah Kapple (133rd, 22:41.61), Dani LeMieux (136th, 22:44.21), and Stephanie Lapidus (146th, 23:21.21).

"I felt that the women raced very well. We had great contributions from our 2nd, 3rd and 4th girl. We will work on bringing the 5th-9th person closer to our 4th," Guarino said. It was an encouraging result for the Toreros as they finished ahead of three conference opponents, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara, and Pacific.

The Toreros finished second in the 6k Open Event. Freshman Carly Lutz finished in 20th with a time of 23:20.73. Allison Mattias (32nd, 23:32.84), Shannon Conlon (36th, 23:38.34), and Olivia Houser (44th, 23:56.05) all finished in the top 50. Following them was Rita Kuckertz (59th, 24:15.46) Cori Van Dyke (72nd, 24:28.58), Allisa Barraza (101st, 25:20.61), Kathryn Adamson (105th, 25:31.71), Olivia Gonzalez (106th, 25:38.31), Hannah Talpash (118th, 26:20.41), and Viki Vozarova (144th, 27:56.41).

On the men's side, coming in behind Hayes was Spencer Hoffman (111th, 25:26.61), Liam Burke (115th, 25:28.91), and Ryan Lesansee (126th, 25:35.91). Matthew Beasley (141st, 25:53.81), James Pedrotti (142nd, 25:53.81), Connor Brandt (149th, 25:59.01), Matthew Smith (151st, 26:00.82), and Tyler Hodges (174th, 26:55.72) also raced.

"The men had many personal bests today. It was great to see Malik Hayes run number one for our team today," Guarino said. "We believe that this course suits his strengths and he definitely proved it today."

The Toreros will return to action on Friday for the Fullerton Invite at 4:00 p.m.
