RIVERSIDE, Calif. – 15 Toreros logged personal bests as both the USD Women's and Men's Cross Country teams took to the UCR Ags Course for the Highlander Invite Saturday morning.
"Our team was without some of our top runners on each side, but nevertheless our team ran very well," head coach
Will Guarino said. "I was happy with their performances, as 70-percent of them ran to their personal best.
Quinn Nelson had an exceptional race, but the same could be said of other Torero pack members."
The San Diego women placed 12th out of 25 teams in the competitive field with 355 points while the men placed 25th with 714 points. Each of the first seven USD women's finishers – majority underclassmen – all notched personal bests on the 6K course. Three of the six total men's racers – without their senior leader Coleman on the day – also PR'd in the 8K event.
Sophomore Quinn Nelson led the way for the women, running a personal best 21:21.2 which was good for 34th place in the race. She was followed by freshman Clare Boneau who ran a 21:53.9, and senior Nathalie Green with a 22:04.5, allowing them to claim 68th and 81st, respectively.
Freshman Brooklyn Hom and senior Lizzie McVey rounded out San Diego's scoring contingent with a 22:10.9, and a 22:38.9.
On the men's side, the Toreros were led by a pair of underclassmen in sophomore Michael Ivory – on his birthday – and freshman Maxwell Gibbons, each running a 26:02.8 and a 26:05.7, respectively, to earn 150th and 154th place.
San Diego's next best score came from Junior Jack DeVries who turned in a 27:01.2, before sophomore Oliver Dortmund and senior William Gratke rounded out the results with scores of 28:11.5, and a 28:38.0.
