SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Reigning WCC Player of the Week Jacqueline Altschuld scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to help lift the Toreros (7-6-2, 3-2-0) to a 1-0 win over San Francisco (6-8-2, 2-3-0) Thursday evening at Torero Stadium. It was the Toreros sixth shutout of the season and they have now won three in a row and six of their last eight.
The Dons' held a 7-3 shot advantage in the first half and nearly scored in the 22nd minute on Sonja Giraud rocket from 30 yards out, but Torero goalkeeper Michelle Craft made a diving save to preserve the shutout.
The Toreros attempted seven corners to USF's three and came close to scoring off one in the 55th minute. The Toreros rattled off three straight shots in a crowded box, but USF defenders were able to deflect all of them.
Just one minute later, Giraud had another close call when she had a one-on-one with Craft. Dribbling to her right she shot across her body, but her shot sailed wide left.
Altschuld was putting pressure on the USF back line for the majority of the second half. In the 84th minute, Ashley Cordero sent a ball in to the box to Nikki Pappalardo, causing the USF keeper to charge. Pappalardo then sent a low cross across the box to Altschuld who tapped it into the open net. It was Pappalardo's eighth assist on the season.
Michelle Craft (4-2-2) collected five saves to pick up the win and the Dons' Madalyn Schiffel (6-8-2) was saddled with the loss.
The Toreros return to the pitch on Sunday for another crucial WCC match when they host Santa Clara for the final home game of the season.
