Toreros Compete in Paul Short Invite

BETHLEHEM, Penn. -
The USD men's and women's cross-country teams raced in the 41st annual Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Penn. Saturday morning. The race is one of the biggest cross-country races in the country, featuring over 5,000 runners and 400 colleges and high schools. Sam Mattice had the top time for the women's team as she continued her impressive freshman season with 54th place finish and a time of 21:12 in the Women's College Gold 6K.

The women's team earned 22nd place out of 38 schools. Following Mattice was junior Ashton Padberg, who finished in 21:44 with a pace of 5:50, good for 97th place. Next were Andrea Hughes (22:00) and Julie Giannini (22:03), followed by Allison Lynch (22:26) and Stephanie Lapidus (23:23).

"The women ran ran very well today. We lined up six on the starting line and the young team took on the challenge," Head Coach Will Guarino said after the race. "They faced true fall weather, a challenging course, a long flight, a fierce field, and they delivered a great performance. This was a big day for the team and I was thrilled to see them rise to a new level of racing."

The men's squad finished in 41st place. Adam Bodine posted the top time for the Torero men; coming in at 25:56 with a 5:14 pace, good for 199th place. Following him was sophomore Ryan Lesansee, who finished in 26:16. Liam Burke (26:21), Matthew Beasley (26:25), James Pedrotti (26:26), and Spencer Hoffman (26:33) all finished within 12 seconds of each other. Sophomore Matthew Smith came in at 27:17.


"Adam lead the charge for us today, and the men were also seated in the fastest and deepest 8km race of the day," Coach Will Guarino said. "The men are comprised of solely sophomores an freshmen and our young team took a risk in developing their racing at the national level."

The Toreros return to action in two weeks, back on the West Coast, when they race at the Bronco Invite in Santa Clara, Calif. on May 18 at 8:00 a.m.
