SUNNYVALE, Calif. – The USD cross-country team competed at the WCC Championships Saturday morning at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. The women’s team, led by Sam Mattice, took sixth place (out of ten). Malik Hayes had the top time for the men’s team, who finished eighth.

Mattice, who set a USD record in the 6k at this course two weeks ago, once again paced the Toreros with a time of 21:06 for 26th place. Not far behind her was Ashton Padberg, coming in with a time of 21:27 to earn 30th place. Rounding out the top five for the Toreros was Julie Giannini (42nd; 21:44), Andrea Hughes (44th; 21:50), and Allison Lynch (49th; 22:00).

This put the Toreros behind last year’s WCC champions USF, who recorded a fourth place finish, while the strength of Gonzaga placed them in fifth.  They were ahead of seventh place Santa Clara, eighth place St. Mary’s and nine place Pacific and tenth place Pepperdine.

“This is a quality field of teams and we were thrilled to get such a strong finish by our Torero women,” said Coach Will Guarino after the race. “The field went out fast and many girls set personal best marks on a muddy course, I asked for them to dig deep and not settle but for their best race of the season and the women delivered yet another superlative performance.”

Malik Hayes had the top Torero time for the second consecutive race, finishing the 8k in 25:32 for 45th place. Right behind him was freshman Liam Burke (48th; 25:42) and Connor Brandt (49th; 25:43). James Pedrotti (53rd; 25:56) and Matthew Beasley (55th; 26:02) rounded out the scoring for USD.

“I was impressed that the men have learned that racing as a pack is the way to go. They have trained well together, but our challenge all season has been to keep that pack together at races to ensure that we distribute energy and pull our team to a higher racing level," Guarino said. "The men made strides to the commitment of pack running and were able to pull our top five guys to a 30 second spread amongst the top five guys.”

Next up for the Toreros is the NCAA Regionals in Palo Alto, Calif. on November 14.
