(San Diego, Calif.) - The visiting Cal Poly Mustangs, a scholarship program and member of the Big Sky Conference, closed out with a winning record (7-5) after handing the USD Toreros (9-2) a 34-3 loss at Torero Stadium tonight before 4,333 fans. The Toreros will be back on campus early tomorrow as they gather to watch the hour long NCAA Division I FCS Playoff Selection Show at 8:00 a.m. (ESPNU) to find out who their first round opponent will be for the Nov. 29th contest.
It was all Cal Poly tonight as they totaled 482 yards of offense while limiting the Toreros to 234 yards. The Mustangs did most of their damage on the ground as QB Chris Brown totaled 93 yards on 15 carries, and back-up QB Dano Graves chipped in with 94 yards and 2 scores on 13 carries. For USD quarterback Keith Williams completed 14-of-29 passes for 153 yards with WR Brandon White hauling in four (28 yards) and WR Reggie Bell collecting three (47 yards). Sophomore RB Jonah Hodges led the Torero ground attack with 56 yards on 14 carries.
The Torero defense played hard the entire night, and were kept busy by Cal Poly's triple option threat. Senior safeties Troy McClelland and Matt Miller each collected 14 tackles, and senior safety Joe LaBarbera and senior linebacker Una Hamala each chipped in with 11 stops. Cal Poly's defense was paced by LB Nick Dzubnar with 7 stops and an interception.
USD pulled to within 7-3 on a 32-yard David Last field goal with 2:12 to go late in the first quarter, but that would be USD `s only points on the night. Last improved his season field goal numbers to a perfect 12-for-12.
