SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The Toreros women's rowing team competed against city rivals San Diego State and UC San Diego, as well as Orange Coast College, on Mission Bay this past Saturday.
While the meet was just considered a scrimmage, the Toreros won bragging rights with all of their varsity boats coming out on top, proving they are the fastest team in San Diego and on Mission Bay.
"I think we did well this past weekend. We showed depth in our program and were able to come first and second in our top two boats consistently," senior captain Taylor Kendzierski said. "The San Diego rowing community is getting faster every year. As a senior, it is reassuring that USD women's rowing will continue to be known as the fastest San Diego crew."
This was the second of three scrimmages the Toreros will compete in before kicking off their spring season in the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Tex. March 22-23.
"Scrimmages against others teams are a great way to practice race-pieces multiple times within a session. Most of the time, scrimmages are a shorter distance than our normal 2km race, so we are able to race, quickly evaluate our performance and turn around and improve our performance of the next piece within minutes," Kendzierski said. "Also, scrimmages begin to introduce the elements of the pressure, seriousness and competitiveness that we will be facing once our official race season kicks off."
USD will get its final tune-up March 2nd when they host Loyola Marymount on Mission Bay.
