This is a great week for the University of San Diego women's crew.

Even before the Crew Classic, the Toreros were riding a high.

On Wednesday, the Toreros learned they were ranked 21st among all women crews in the NCAA - marking the first time a local crew has been recognized in the national rankings.

The Toreros capped that news by finishing third Saturday morning on Mission Bay in their heat of the Jessop-Whittier Cup for the elite eights to become one of the few local crews ever to qualify for one of Sunday's co-featured races.

And there's more.

The USD women's four also advanced to its championship race Sunday.

Ditto for the Toreros Open and Novice eights. In fact, only one USD crew fell short - and the Junior Varsity eight came close.

It might be the strongest showing ever by a local crew in the 41-year history of the Crew Classic.
