WCC Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD Women's rowing team earned their second straight WCC Crew of the Month award, the conference office announced Tuesday morning. The Varsity Four earned the honor for April after the USD Varsity Eight won the award in March. The Toreros have won the monthly honor three times since the award was created last season.
The Torero women's rowing team had a historic month of April. Following a strong performance in the San Diego Crew Classic, the Toreros earned their first NCAA ranking in school history. Shortly after, the USD Varsity Four knocked off No. 1 California at the Lake Natoma Invite.
The Varsity Four began the month by qualifying for the 4+ Grand Final Karen Plumleigh Courtney Cup at the San Diego Crew Classic after finishing third in their heat with a time of 7:32.722, coming in behind ranked schools Cal and Washington State and ahead of Tulsa, Kansas State, Old Dominion, and University of Victoria. In the grand final, the Toreros finished fourth with a time of 7:45.55. They trailed powerhouse programs USC, Cal, and Washington, and finished ahead of Iowa.
The Toreros' strong showing at the Crew Classic vaulted them into the NCAA rankings at No. 20; they moved up to No. 17 the following week.
At the Lake Natoma Invite, the USD Varsity Four edged No. 1 California and Sacramento State in the opening session with a time of 7:25.2. In the second session, the Toreros' V4 came in third behind No. 7 Stanford and No. 9 Notre Dame with a time of 7:37.9.
