LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The 14th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 9 Purdue University Friday evening at the Motar Board Premier tournament.
With the 22-25, 21-25, 20-25 loss, the Toreros fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Boilermakers improve to 2-0 overall.
Alaysia Brown paced the Torero offense, as she recorded a team-best seven kills. Both Sandra Lozic and Lisa Kramer recorded six kills apiece. Jianna Bonomi recorded a team-best 22 assists, while Hunter Jennings racked up 13 digs. As a team, USD hit .135.
In the first set, the Boilermakers raced out to a 7-3 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Purdue would manage to hold the lead at about 2-3 points through most of the frame, until they built up a 5-point lead at 22-17. The Toreros made a late push and went on a 5-1 run, pulling the Toreros to within one at 23-22, forcing the Boilermakers into a timeout. The home team then managed to grab the next two points to take the first set, 25-22.
In the second set, USD grabbed the first three points, only to see Purdue answer with an 8-2 run to take an 8-5 lead. USD would then manage to close the gap down to one at 11-10 on a Jennings service ace. This is as close as USD would get, as Purdue used a 5-1 run to regain the momentum and take a 16-11 lead. The Boilermakers then went on to claim set two by a final of 25-21.
In the third set, the Boilermakers raced out to a 5-2 lead, but the Toreros didn't fade away. USD slowly began to chip away at the lead and eventually took the lead on a Kramer kill at 14-13. The two teams then began to trade points until the score was knotted at 18-all. Then the Boilermakers went on to close out the game on a 7-2 run to complete the win with a 25-20 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they conclude play in the Motar Board Premier against South Florida at 4:30 p.m.
