Sept. 12, 2014 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of San Diego men’s tennis team kicked off their 2014-15 season at the Harvard Chowder Fest this afternoon. Going up against the Harvard Crimson, the Toreros proved to be strong force in doubles play, winning three out of the four matches.
Although the Crimson’s No. 36-ranked Denis Nguyen and Brian Yeung knocked off No. 28 duo junior Jordan Angus and sophomore Filip Vittek, the Toreros continued to sweep the remaining matches. Juniors Uros Petronijevic and Romain Kalaydjian defeated Harvard’s Conor Haughey and Sebastian Beltrame 8-5, while senior Ciaran Fitzgerald and freshman James Ponwith pulled out a tight win over Nicky Hu and Jean Thirouin 8-7. Sophomores Patrick Hall and Geoffrey Fosso also picked up their first victory of the season, defeating Kelvin Lam and Grant Solomon 8-5.
In singles play, the Toreros grabbed three wins. Vittek and Fosso found success against the Crimson. Vittek got the victory over Harvard’s Sebastian Beltrame 6-2, 6-3, while Fosso defeated Conor Haughey 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. No. 121-ranked Petronijevic started his season off strong, cruising past No. 18 Denis Nguyen 6-1, 6-3.
“Great first day today,” Head coach Brett Masi said. “The guys completed well throughout. I am very happy with Uros getting a great win. However, we got to be ready to come out and play hard tomorrow against Alabama.”
The Toreros return to action, tomorrow at 12:00 PM ET against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
