Toreros Fall at Jacksonville 35-18

Sept. 13, 2014

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The USD football team (1-1, 0-1) opened the PFL season with a tough 35-18 loss at Jacksonville Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins gained 447 yards of total offense, while forcing four Torero turnovers and holding USD to 281 yards.

Sophomore Keith Williams struggled in his first career road start, going 11-for-27 for 137 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Jonah Hodges ran for 88 yards on 22 carries with a touchdown.

The Dolphins cracked the scoreboard first. After being forced to punt in the game's opening drive, Toney Sawyer fumbled the return at the Torero 23 yard line. Jacksonville scored three plays later on a 16-yard pass from Kade Bell to Andrew Robustelli.

The Dolphins added to their total with a 10-play 92-yard drive, keyed by a Torero personal foul that negated a Jamal Agnew interception. After a 39-yard pass from Bell to Dorian Guy, Ulysses Bryant scored on a five-yard touchdown run to give Jacksonville a 14-0 lead.

The Torero offense struggled early, failing to get a first down on their first two drives. However, USD's third drive started at the Dolphins' 43 after Troy McClelland forced a fumble of running back Ulysses Bryant. A roughing the passer penalty against Jacksonville on third down kept the Torero drive alive and eventually Keith Williams found Brandon White in the endzone for a nine-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7.

The Toreros forced another fumble on the following Dolphins' possession, taking over at the JU 16-yard line after Steven Spencer knocked the ball loose from Andy Jones. However, USD gained just one yard in three plays and had to settle for a 33 yard David Last field goal.

The Dolphins added one more touchdown before halftime, scoring on another Bryant rushing touchdown, this one from four yards out.

The Dolphins scored quickly in the second half, opening the lead to 28-10. Orlando Thomas scampered for a 23-yard touchdown run to cap off a four-play 57-yard scoring drive.

The Toreros cut into the Dolphins' lead early in the fourth quarter when Jonah Hodges scored on an eight-yard touchdown run. Williams converted the two-point conversion by connecting with DeAngelo Barksdale, bringing the score to 28-18.

The Dolphins answered right back with a seven-play 83-yard drive that ended with another Dorian Guy touchdown reception to give Jacksonville a 35-18 lead.

Defensively, the Toreros were led by Una Hamala's 13 total tackles. Troy McClelland added ten tackles (1.5 for loss) and forced a fumble. Nic Henson added seven tackles and recorded the Toreros' only sack, while Jamal Agnew tallied his first interception of the 2014 season.

The Toreros will return home next Saturday when they host Princeton at 1:00 p.m.
