Sept. 16, 2014 Final SMC Invite Results 2014
SEASIDE, Calif. - The USD men's golf won the 2014 Saint Mary's Invitational as they shot the day's low team score of 289 to finish up the three-round tournament at even-par 864. The two-day event was held at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California. The Toreros headed into today's final round five strokes behind host Saint Mary's College in the sixteen team tournament, and finished one stroke better after the Gaels turned in a final round 295. Torero senior Mathias Dahl earned medalist honors and his first college victory with his final 7-under par total of 209 (72-65-72). He edged out runner-up Jobim Carlos of USF by one stroke (210, 71-69-70) and Matt Lee of Pacific by two strokes (211, 73-69-69).
"This was a solid team victory this week," said head coach Cory Scoggin. "Everyone contributed and Mathias Dahl played stellar golf to capture his first collegiate victory. We closed out rounds extremely well finishing a combined 16 under in the last 3 holes all three rounds combined. When you finish that well you will always give yourself a chance to win and fortunately it was just enough to get the job done this week. I am very proud of the team's effort, composure and focus that they displayed on the course the last couple days."
Rounding out USD scoring was Alex Chiarella who fired a final round 71 to move up into a tie for 9th at 1-under par 215 (71-73-71), Daniel Lopez (21st at 220, 73-73-74), Will Twitty (T30 at 223, 77-74-72), and Colin Pearson (T42 at 226, 79-71-76). USD's Skyler Finnell, playing as an individual, tied for 26th overall at 222 (74-69- 79).
USD returns to action at the end of the month when they compete in the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colorado on September 29-30.
