SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The USD men's soccer team (2-1-4) earned their second shutout of the season after tying UC Riverside 0-0 on the road Thursday evening. It was an evenly matched contest that saw both teams attempt 14 shots, but neither team could find the back of the net. Freshman goalkeeper Thomas Olsen made six saves and earned his second career shutout.
Coming off their first loss of the season to No. 8 New Mexico, the Toreros battled to a scoreless first half despite leading in both shots attempted (6-3) and shots on goal (3-1).
In a chippy second half, the Toreros collected five yellow cards. UC Riverside held the shot advantage in the second frame 9-6, but the Toreros' stout defense held firm when it counted.
The Toreros managed two shots in the first extra time period, but didn't have a shot attempt in the second extra period, while holding the Highlanders to one attempt.
The Toreros' leading scorers, Connor Brandt and Torrey DeArmas, both led the team with four shot attempts.
It was the Toreros' fourth extra time match of the season and all four of them have ended in draws. The last time USD had at least four draws in a season was in 2008.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday when they travel to No. 6 UC Irvine for a 5:00 p.m. match.
