LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team suffered its first West Coast Conference defeat of the season, a 3-0 loss to No. 22 Loyola Marymount University Tuesday evening at the Gersten Pavilion.
With the 16-25, 21-25, 16-25 loss, the Toreros fall to 9-6 overall and move to 2-1 in the WCC. The Toreros also saw their 14-match winning streak against LMU come to an end. With the win, the Lions improve to 14-1 overall and move to 2-1 in the WCC.
Alaysia Brown led the Torero offense with 10 kills, while hitting for a -.034 clip. Canace Finley recorded seven kills and she hit for a .455 clip. Jianna Bonomi recorded 16 assists, while Hunter Jennings paced the defense with 12 digs. As a team, USD had its worst offensive output of the season, hitting for a season-low .011 attack percentage.
In the first set, with the score knotted at 4-all, the Lions would go on a 9-3 run to grab all the momentum, which forced USD into a timeout. Out of the break, USD would grab the next two points, but they just could not get any closer, as LMU cruised to a 25-16 win.
In the second set, USD once again kept things close early, but with the score knotted at 5-all, LMU would use a 8-3 run to gain control of the momentum and take e a 13-8 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. Out of the break, a Brown kill sparked an 8-4 Torero run, pulling San Diego to within one at 17-16, which forced the Lions into a timeout. The two teams then traded point-for-point over the next few possessions, until the Lions took a 23-21 lead, which forced USD into its final timeout. LMU then grabbed the next two points to take a 25-21 win.
In the third and final set, USD kept things close early, but the Lions would take a 5-point lead at 13-8, and USD just could not recover from this defect. The Toreros hit .034 for this frame and LMU hit .375. The Lions would complete the stunning sweep with a 25-16 win.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday when they return home to host Santa Clara University in a 7 p.m. match inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
