(Stockton, Calif.) - The USD Toreros dropped a hard-fought 59-57 decision to the Pacific Tigers in WCC action tonight. Senior guard Johnny Dee scored a team-high 20 points as he made 13-13 free throws on the night. Pacific's T.J. Wallace scored a game-high 22 points. Dee, who led the NCAA in free accuracy last season, improved his single game perfect mark from last season's 10-10 performance at Pacific on Feb. 15th.
The Toreros took a 57-55 lead on two Johnny Dee free throws with 48 seconds left, but Pacific's T.J. Wallace answered with an old-fashioned 3-point play with 40 seconds to go for a 58-57 advantage. David Taylor made the second of two free throw with 3 seconds to go for the final score. Duda Sanadze attempted a three at the buzzer but had it blocked. The entire second half went back-and-forth but Pacific just made one more play down the stretch.
The Toreros rallied in the first half after a slow start that saw them miss their first nine shots from the field and trail 11-1 out of the gates. USD's defense kept them close until a Duda Sanadze three-pointer helped the Toreros kick their offensive game into gear. Johnny Dee would score 9 points in the first twenty minutes on the strength of 5-5 from the line and USD would eventually head into the break with a 27-24 advantage. T.J. Wallace paced the Tigers with 8 first half points.
Marcus Harris (9 points) and Brandon Perry (9 points) gave the Toreros a lift off the bench, while Jito Kok and Christopher Anderson each fouled out. With 2rebounds, Christopher Anderson reached the 400 rebound milestone on the nose to go with other milestones of 1,000 points (1,102), 600 assists (689) and 200 steals (235).
The Toreros return to San Diego to begin a 3-game home stand starting with BYU on Saturday, January 24th, at 1:00 p.m. in the WCC Game of the Week.
